Several months ago I had the amazing chance of visiting Ireland with my girlfriend. She convinced me that Ireland was our next destination and mentioned that we absolutely must visit Dingle for the trip to be complete. We decided to drive from Dublin and made various stops along the way, but no town stuck out quite like Dingle. As you drive in you are welcomed by stunning views of Dingle Harbor and the surrounding town.
We decided that we would pick a place to stay when we arrived and we quickly settled on the Greenmount House. The Greenmount House is a classic Bed and Breakfast that offers views of their garden or of the harbor for a few extra dollars a night. We decided to save a few dollars and got a garden view, but the room itself was fantastic. We had a very large room with big windows and a very nice bathroom. The Bed and Breakfast is just on the outskirts of the town and after a quick walk we found ourselves right in the heart of Dingle.
In Dingle we walked around the town and made a pit stop at Murphy’s Ice Cream parlor. Murphy’s Sea Salt ice cream might be some of the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted. Although it was a cool spring day, the Ice Cream was too delicious to pass up on our walk. We visited several historical sites and eventually made our way down to the Dingle Harbor. In the harbor I learned the story of the Dingle Dolphin Fungie. I had no idea Ireland had dolphins and was sad we were not able to see him.
For Dinner, we decided on the Global Village Restaurant, which offered a great mix of surf and turf. We had a medley of seafood and beef accompanied with some fantastic local wines. After dinner we continued to explore the town and visited a local staple, An Driochead Beag. A local bar with live Celtic music and dancing. We loved the pub and highly recommend it for anyone staying the night in Dingle.
We only had limited time in Dingle, but for such a small town there are so many wonderful places to visit. Murphy’s Pub and John Benny’s Pub were also great options to listen to live music, but on the night we were in Dingle the places were too crowded to sit. We also did not have time to get back to Out of the Blue for a seafood dinner.
Overall, Dingle is one of my favorite cities that I’ve been lucky enough to visit throughout my travels. No, it is not as flashy as Dublin or Gallway, but it was by far our favorite stop along our journey around Ireland.
Leaving Dingle we drove around the Dingle Pinninsula and onto the Cliffs of Mohr. We loved our time in Ireland, but especially loved our time in Dingle. I hope you are all able to eventually make the journey to Dingle, it is well worth the drive.
