I’ve had the metal American Express Platinum card for just under a month now and overall I really like the card. I think American Express did a great job redesigning a card that’s changed so little over the years. I rarely use the card in public because I earn more points on other cards in my wallet, but every now and then I reach for the American Express Platinum card and run into my issue with the card.
The Metal American Express Platinum Card Doesn’t Bend
Yes, I know what you’re thinking, duh! The issue isn’t just that the card doesn’t bent, but that it doesn’t let me easily grab the middle card from my wallet. I currently use a wallet with 6 card slots on either side and a cash pocket in the middle. I’ve had this wallet since 2013 or so and have no intention of switching any time soon. Recently someone tried to steal my wallet, but I fought to the death luckily got it back.
I typically keep my most used card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve, in the top slot which makes it easy to grab for everyday purchases. Then in my middle slot I keep the card I use the least, in this case the American Express Platinum card. Then in the bottom slot I keep another card I use frequently, the Citi ThankYou Premier card. (I moved them around for the above photo)
The issue I’ve been running into is when I need to use the American Express Platinum card it’s nearly impossible to get out. I tried switching it to the bottom slot, but then my Citi card wouldn’t come out! I like metal cards, but they make getting cards out of my wallet nearly impossible. Maybe US Bank realized this problem and that’s why the issuer decided to offer 3X points on Mobile Payments with the Altitude Reserve card (also metal).
Final Thoughts
I realize this is definitely a first world problem, but it’s been frustrating me for a while now. I like keeping my credit cards on one side of my wallet and ID, transit card, and debit card on the other. With the addition of another metal card in my wallet maybe it’s time to rethink this layout. Am I crazy or is anyone else running into this issue?
Thanks for listening to my little digression, now back to your regular scheduled programing!
