A few weeks ago I received a rather interesting email from Chase. The subject of the email simply said “Convenient way to earn 3x points.” Within the email was a simple message from Chase. The message informed me of the ability to earn 3X UR points when using Apple Pay at select merchants. Specifically, when I use apple pay to pay for purchases at Hotel Tonight, Caviar, and Uber. Obviously this sounded like a great deal until I took a step back. That’s when I realized, I already earn 3X UR points for those purchases!?
Confused By Chase Correspondence
I get promotional email all the time. However, it’s usually when there’s actually something to promote. For example, I recently received an email from American Express informing me of a few new Amex Offers. That promotional email made sense because I wouldn’t have check Amex Offers otherwise.
This promotional email made me think that I was getting something special. I thought, oh wow Chase is expanding the 3X purchase bonus when paying with Apple Pay. This would make sense as it’s similar to the benefit offered from the US Bank Altitude Reserve card. I figured Chase introduced this new benefit to compete directly with that card. Sadly, as far as I can tell that isn’t the case.
It appears the email (above) from Chase is just a ‘friendly’ reminder that I can use my Chase Sapphire Reserve card with apple pay. The email also reminds me that I’ll earn 3X points for Travel and Dining purchases even when using Apple Pay. Based on the language of the email it doesn’t appear that going forward I’ll earn 3X points on all Apple Pay purchases, although that would be nice.
Final Thoughts
I’m really confused, obviously, by the recent email from Chase. I’m not exactly sure why they’re sending out such vague emails. Generally when you receive promotional emails from a card issuer they contain a true promotion. Promotions are usually a limited amount time to earn a certain number of points or a new way to save money at select merchants. This email simply reminded me of a benefit that I already had and seemingly promoted three brands that Chase maybe wants me to consider using in the future.
I’m sorry that I’ve wasted your time as Chase wasted mine. Now back to your regularly scheduled programing.
