Well, I’m a few months late on this, but I was going through old emails and I found one from American Express that stuck out. Earlier this year, in February to be exact, American Express sent me a year-in-review with my new Rose Gold card which I found entertaining.
I’m not sure why but I really do enjoy seeing these year-in-review emails from credit card issuers, airlines, and hotels. I guess it’s just a fun way to look back at the past year and help plan for the year ahead.
Anyway, the email started off by introducing the year-in-review concept before immediately jumping into some statistics.
Below this introduction were a few statistics about my spending habits. Keep in mind this report is as of 11/30/18 and I had only received the card in Mid-October.
As you can see, by the time this report was published I had only used two months worth of monthly dining credits. Also, I used this card 3 times on airline bookings, that was a mistake as I missed out on earning 5X points with the Platinum card. However, I was trying to hit the sign-up bonus requirement so I’ll forgive myself.
The year-in-review also highlighted my shop small purchases which I thought was interesting. I’m actually not exactly sure which purchases qualified.
Finally, the year-in-review email also served as a reminder to maximize your card member benefits for the (then) upcoming year.
Obviously nothing in this email is groundbreaking, but I thought it was a nice reminder.
Final Thoughts
I really do enjoy year-in-review emails like this. Sure there really isn’t anything special to them, but they do serve as a nice reminder of the prior year. What’s particularly interesting about this one is that I don’t plan to keep the card for another year.
While I’ve been very happy with the American Express (Rose) Gold card, I just don’t really have much use for it. Unfortunately other cards out today offer better benefits so I can’t justify paying the annual fee again.
If this were the only card in my wallet then I would gladly keep it open, but given the other cards I carry or plan on carrying I just can’t keep this one open another year. That is, unless Amex expands some benefits soon, which I don’t expect.
